Title: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Publisher's Advance Specimen) Author: Baum, L. Frank Place: New York Publisher: George M. Hill Date: 1900 Description: [4], [11]-40 pp. With 16 color plates by W.W. Denslow. 7¾x5¾, color pictorial boards backed with red cloth. Rare, possibly unique, unrecorded publisher's dummy, apparently a selection of specimen plates and text, possibly a mock-up for an abridged edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz that was never produced. There is a blue pencil inscription on the blank recto of the first color plate, which follows the pastedown, reading "Publisher's Advance Specimen. Not to be sold. N./d." The front board is the title-page of the first edition of the book, and the rear board is the illustration captioned "The Head shot forward and struck the Scarecrow," though the caption has been neatly eradicated. The front pastedown of the book is the dedication by Baum to his wife, with a silhouette of the Witch of the North in the lower portion. Two color plates follow, then the Introduction, on the verso of which is the copyright leaf, with "Copyright 1899/ By L. Frank Baum/ and W.W. Denslow/ All Rights Reserved" on a signboard nailed to a tree, with the Tin Woodman standing looking at it. Another color plate follows, then the leaf reading "Chapter I. The Cyclone." verso blank, with the beginning of the text on p.[11] next. Text pages through 40 follow, with color plates interspersed. The rear pastedown is the leaf reading "Chapter V. The Rescue of the Tin Woodman." The sheets and plates are in later states, in fact, as noted by Oz bibliographer Peter Hanff, even later than those one typically finds in Hill bindings. It seems very likely that they were part of the inventory of the George M. Hill Company that was purchased by the small Chicago publishing house Geo. W. Ogilvie following Hill's bankruptcy, and this dummy represents an attempt by Ogilvie to make use of some of the remaining, unbound sheet from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, putting out a partial version with some of the Denslow parts. Such a version was never produced. Lot Amendments Condition: Faint rubbing and soiling to the boards, a few nicks to the edges; offset to the blank recto of the 1st plate; very good or better. Item number: 198604
