Beschreibung:

THEATRES] SAUNDERS, GEORGE. A Treatise on Theatres . Holborn, London: Printed for the Author and sold by J. & J. Taylor, at the Architectural Library, 1790. Later half morocco, marbled sides, all edges marbled. [xii, including half-title, title, dedication, introduction and contents list), 94, with 13 plates (four folding). Some occasional but rather nominal foxing, old repaired tear at the platemark of plate XI, now separating again, but the plates generally in sound condition, front endpapers detached, in all a very nice copy. With the bookplate of Ogden Codman and Thomas Chawner's signature on the title, likely the architect Thomas Chawner retired 1845. Saunders was one of the founders of the British Museum. At the time of this publication, as an architect he had just completed two major theatres. It is especially significant for its discussion of theatrical acoustics; although Saunders' theories were largely incorrect (one modern work on the subject describes them as "quaint"), he was a pioneer in this regard. RIBA 2908. C Estate of William W. Appleton
