Title: Theatrum ethnico idolatricum politico-historicum Author: Cartari, Vincenzo Place: Mainz Publisher: Ludovici Bourgeat Date: 1699 Description: [8], 228, [16] pp. Half-title. Illustrated with 88 engraved plates. (4to) 8x6, period speckled sheep, spine gilt in compartments, morocco lettering-piece. Cartari's scarce guide to the iconography of mythology with the many interesting engravings. Cartari was born circa 1500. This edition appears to be a newly revised version of his Le Imagini de i Dei degli antichi... (1571) which was one of the most important mythological source books for Baroque (and later) artists. This copy with early ownership inscription on title. Stirling Maxwell 284. Lot Amendments Condition: Corners and spine ends repaired with some loss to gilt, corners showing, joints just starting, front free endpaper coming loose; some browning to text, 2D3 with tear from lower margin affecting 2 lines, some plates a bit poorly printed, but clean; a very attractive copy.
