Baillière Date: 1847 Description: 2 volumes. xxxi, [1], 476, [3] + 20 irregularly numbered ad pages. With one fold-out table (8vo) 23x14 cm (9x5½") original printed wrappers. With additional atlas volume bound in original printed boards, containing twenty hand colored plates, one folding, with tissue guards. Scarce set with both the text and atlas volumes. Félix-Archimède Pouchet was a French naturalist and a leading proponent of spontaneous generation of life from non-living materials, and as such an opponent of Louis Pasteur's germ theory. In 1847 Pouchet effectively launched the study of the physiology of cytology. Wellcome p.425 Lot Amendments Condition: Some wear and soiling to wrappers of text volume, with some small chips, etc. at edges, some tearing to spine; scattered foxing, some pages still uncut; atlas volume neatly rebacked, wear and staining to boards, light rubber library stamp on title; very good.
