Paris: Michel Sonnius et Nicolas Chesneau, 1575. 3 parts in 2 volumes, 2° (375 x 242 mm). 4 hand-colored engraved maps and numerous woodcut illustrations in text, ruled in red. (Title with stamp excised and skilfully patched, some light browning and staining, a few marginal tears, tiny hole to bbbb2 affecting a letter and image on verso, blank tttt2 lacking.) 16th-century calf gilt, central arabesque surrounded by four smaller foliate stamps and four large arabesque corner pieces on sides, gilt and gauffered edges (some light rubbing). Provenance : Nancy, “Senef, le Jne, Libraire” (label on front pastedown). FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE 16TH-CENTURY COSMOGRAPHY. The first volume relates to Africa and Asia; the second volume to Europe and America, with richly illustrated chapters on Brazil. “André Thevet was a Franciscan monk who travelled extensively in Europe and made a reputed short journey to South America. Upon his return he records that he sailed along the eastern coast of North America ... The fine map ... relies largely on the Mercator model of 1569, most noticeably with the bulge to the north-west coast of North America. The southern continent, 'Partie de la Terre Antartique Incogneue,’ is full of descriptions of natives hunting, fishing and socialising. The geography and nomenclature of North America are largely derived from other sources. The quality of this block is very high and it is a shame that it is not more easily found" (Burden). Mortimer notes two issues: one with ã6 blank, and one with a portrait of Thevet printed on the verso of ã6; the present copy has the portrait on the verso of blank ã6. The privilege was held by L'Huilier and Chaudière, and copies were also issued with Pierre L'Huilier imprint and device.
