THOMAS AND WILLIAM DANIELL (1749-1840 & 1769-1837)
THOMAS AND WILLIAM DANIELL (1749-1840 & 1769-1837) Oriental Scenery. One hundred and fifty views of the architecture, antiquities and landscape scenery of Hindostan. London: Printed for the Authors, 1816 [but Henry G. Bohn, c.1841]. Six vols in three, 4° (377 x 268mm). Six engraved title pages, 144 uncoloured aquatint plates, and 8 engraved plans. (Occasional spotting, mainly marginal, two plates more seriously affected, some light dust soiling.) Contemporary half morocco, spines lettered in gilt, marbled boards (upper join to vol. II split but firm, upper joint to vol. III split at head, extremities rubbed, corners bumped). Provenance : ownership inscriptions to front pastedowns: E. le Loscombe, 29 August, 1863; Catherine jane Stable, 9th Novr., 1889; and to front free endpaper: Chris Coates, 15 Sept., 1938. THE DANIELLS' MOST CELEBRATED WORK. The fine aquatint plates represent 'Mughal and Dravidian monuments, cityscapes and sublime views of mountains and waterfalls' ( ODNB ). Advertised in Henry Bohn's 1841 catalogue as being 'Elegantly half-bound morocco, gilt backs' (as here) the publication history of this issue (both coloured and uncoloured) is obscure. Neither Abbey nor Sutton are able to demonstrate conclusively whether Bohn purchased a stock of plates (ie. the illustrations themselves), or the copper plates to print the images. Abbey Travel , 432; Sutton 13(A); Archer p.235.
