THOMAS DANIELL (1749-1840) AND WILLIAM DANIELL (1769-1837) Hindoo Temples at Agouree, on the River Soane, Bahar N.W. View of Rotas Ghur, Bahar The Sacred Tree of the Hindoos at Ghyar, Bahar 3 hand-coloured aquatints, drawn and engraved by Thomas Daniell on thick Whatman paper (620 x 475mm to 653 x 493mm), dated 1796, from part I of Thomas and William Daniell's Oriental Scenery , London: 1795-1797 (inner margins lightly worn, not affecting image, light soiling and one or two short tears outside platemark, second plate with small ink mark in the bottom right margin). Abbey Travel 420 nos. 20, 21, 16. By 12 January 1790 the Daniells reached Agori with its picturesque views of temples submerged by banyan trees. Agori, on the river Son, 'is a place of worship of the greatest antiquity, which is obvious from the fragments of sculptured idols frequently to be met with there' (Journal). While in the great elevations of Rohtasgarh William Daniell noted that 'there was nothing to disturb the serenity of [their] repose save the chattering of legions of monkeys which had colonised the neighbouring glen' (Journal).
