THOMAS DANIELL (BRITISH 1749-1840) CHU CHUNG ISLAND AND FORT, TA (PEARL) RIVER, CHINA CIRCA 1798 Oil on canvas Inscribed 'View on the Ta river, China by Chun Chung' 44.5 x 59cm (17½ x 23 in.) Provenance: Sale, Christie's, 26 September 2001, lot 51 Thomas Daniell and his young nephew William, visited China twice: on their way to India in 1785, and on their return to England from India in 1793. The first leg of their passage to Calcutta in 1785 was made on the Indiaman Atlas, which left them at Whampoa in August 1785. They remained in China, visiting Macao and Canton, before taking a coasting vessel to Calcutta in the spring of 1786. They returned to China after their famous tour on India, visiting Canton from September 1793 until March 1794. The current work is an addition to the few extant pictures of Chinese subjects by Thomas Daniell listed by Shellim (India and the Daniells: Additional Oil paintings, London, 1988). Condition Report: Canvas has been relined. Surface dirt and a reddish discolouration of the varnish. Very fine craquelure across the surface of the canvas as well as a few areas of star shaped craquelure mainly in the central hill. A vertical line of cracking paint (approx. 12 cm in length) in the sky on the right. UV reveals a few areas of fine scattered retouching. Condition Report Disclaimer
