Illustrated with many plates from facsimiles, paintings, engravings, photographs, etc., including frontispiece portrait. 9¼x6, brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. Contains an slip invitation for Thomas Say to the Wistar Party, partially printed and hand-written, tipped-in on the front pastedown, stating: "Mr. Binney requests the pleasure of Mr. Say's Company..." dated January 26, 1807. Also, a 3-page wrapper-bound booklet (with frontispiece portrait) titled: Another Miniature Portrait of Thomas Say and Other Say Notes by Weiss and Ziegler, reprinted from the Journal of the New York Entomological Society, September 1931, laid in. Thomas Say (1787-1843) American naturalist, entomologist, malacologist, crustaceologist and taxonomist, is often considered to be the founder of descriptive entomology in the United States. Lot Amendments Condition: Volume spine faded, light rubbing; front hinge tender; tipped-in invitation with splits and darkening; mild wear to laid-in booklet; else very good to near fine.
