THOREAU, HENRY DAVID Autograph quotation signed ("Henry D. Thoreau"), Concord, [Mass.], 25 February 1857. 1 page, 8vo, remains of old mounting on verso. BIRD-SONG FROM THE SHORE OF WALDEN POND "I hear a song-sparrow signing from the bushes on the shore, -- olit, olit, olit -- chip, chip, chip, che, char, -- che wiss, wiss, wiss, --" Walden p. 333...." Thoreau, whose Walden was written in and published, with modest success in , was seldom asked to furnish signatures or to pen quotations for collectors or admirers, and such quotations are apparently quite rare. We have not traced a single autograph quotation from Walden at auction since at least 19 . Provenance : Removed from an autograph album compiled in the mid- to late- nineteenth century by a Massachusetts woman of literary interests (the album contained similar examples of Bryant, Sigourney, Howe, Howells and Lowell).
