Thoreau, whose Walden was written in and published, with modest success in , was seldom asked to furnish signatures or to pen quotations for collectors or admirers, and such quotations are apparently quite rare. We have not traced a single autograph quotation from Walden at auction since at least 19 . Provenance : Removed from an autograph album compiled in the mid- to late- nineteenth century by a Massachusetts woman of literary interests (the album contained similar examples of Bryant, Sigourney, Howe, Howells and Lowell).
