Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1906. 20 volumes, 8vo, 220 x 141 mm., contemporary dark green half morocco gilt, t.e.g. others uncut, spines gilt, slight wear to hinges. "MANUSCRIPT" EDITION, number 431 of 600 copies signed "Houghton Mifflin & Co." in volume 1. [ With :] THOREAU. Autograph manuscript leaf from his journal, n.p., 16 May 1851, 2 pages, folio, in ink with extensive pencilled revisions and additions, an unusually full leaf, bearing, on one side (comprising 27 lines), an account of a walk in the woods on a moonlit night: "...In the moonlight night what intervals are created! The rising moon is related to the near pine tree, behind which it rises, & we get a greater notion of distance..." The verso with a long passage (26 lines) of a similar nature: "I am struck by the blackness, at this hour, of the small pines 2 or 3 feet high, on the plain below..." (20)
