THORNTON, Robert John (1768?-1837). Temple of Flora; or garden of the botanist, poet, painter or philosopher . London: Dr. Thornton, 1812. 4 o (376 x 298 mm). Aquatint frontispiece by Cosway after Burke, engraved titles, by Tomkins after Burney; 2 stipple engravings by Russell and Opie after Maddocks, and Reinagle after Bartolozzi and Landseer, 28 hand-colored aquatints by Pether, Thornton, Edwards, Reinagle & Henderson, after drawings by Dunkarten, Roffe, Gaugain, Quilley, Maddox, Burk, Maddan and Stadler (occasional light foxing and browning). Contemporary green tooled morocco gilt, gilt edges (rebacked, wear to corners and edges). Provenance : Bookplate of L.D. Waller. Second edition of The Temple of Flora , which first appeared in a larger format in 1807 under the title "New Illustrations of the Sexual System of Linnaeus". Dunthorne 302; Nissen BBI 1955 (note).
