(Lacking final ?blank, lightly browned, small marginal tears to the upper and lower margins of 'The Nodding Renealmia' plate.) Red morocco gilt by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, covers with double-fillet border, spine in six compartments with with raised bands, lettered in the second and third, the others with double fillet border, gilt edges. Provenance : Thomas Higson (early inscriptions). FIRST QUARTO EDITION of Thornton's masterpiece, the majority of the images being reduced copies of the original large folio plates, but including one plate ( Artichoke Protea by Quilley after Henderson) that is pictured here for the first time. The edition, according to Dunthorne, was published initially as fourth level prizes in the lottery that Thornton ran in an attempt to recoup the losses he had incurred during the production of the folio work.
