THORNTON, Robert John (ca 1768-1837). Temple of Flora or Garden of the Botanist, Poet, Painter, and Philosopher . London: 1812. Large 4° (389 x 311 mm). Engraved color-printed and hand-colored frontispiece, engraved title on two leaves, vignette headpiece to first title, 2 engraved plates and 28 color-printed and hand-colored engraved botanical plates. (Light browning and staining.) 19th-century green morocco gilt (light wear to joints and edges). Provenance: Robert Horace Walpole (1854–1931), 5th Earl of Orford, 6th Baron Walpole, descendent of Horace Walpole and Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford, the first Prime Minister of Great Britain (armorial bookplate). FIRST QUARTO EDITION of Thornton's masterpiece, the majority of the images being reduced copies of the original large folio plates, but including one plate ( Artichoke Protea by Quilley after Henderson) that is pictured here for the first time. The edition, according to Dunthorne, was published initially as fourth level prizes in the lottery that Thornton ran in an attempt to recoup the losses he had incurred during the production of the folio work .
