including a common Logan and McPherson by Morse's Gallery, with a view of Brigadier General Henry B. Carrington by National Gallery, Indianapolis and lastly, Major, later Major General Joseph Cabell Breckinridge, identified in period ink by Porter's Gallery, Cincinnati. Carrington, a lesser-known Civil War officer, is best remembered for his complicity in the 1866 Fetterman Massacre. During the war he was Colonel of the 18th US Infantry, promoted to Brigadier General in 1862 largely on the merits of his timely ability to deliver freshly recruited Ohio and Indiana regiments where they were needed. Carrington, a staunch abolitionist, also acquired a reputation for persecuting "disloyal elements" in those states. Carrington remained in the army until 1870, continued as a prolific historical author and died in 1912. Joseph Cabell Breckinridge entered service as a 2nd Lt. in the 2nd US Artillery and served in a variety of staff positions and by war's end had earned two brevets to Captain and Major, one for "gallantry in battle before Atlanta." He stayed in the post-war army and rose to the rank of Major General during the Spanish American War and did not retire until 1903. The Carrington and Breckinridge are desirable cartes. Condition:All four cdvs in G condition showing significant handling and wear.
