He was appointed Shoeing Smith in May 1885; Corporal Farrier in January 1889, and Staff Corporal Farrier in October 1895. He served in South Africa from 16 September 1899, but stayed behind after the Composite Regiment of Household Cavalry returned to England in November 1900, and served with the Army Veterinary Department. He was discharged from the Army on 31 January 1905, having been awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal in October 1904.
