THREE HARDSTONE SCHOLAR'S OBJECTS 17TH/18TH CENTURY One a small malachite brushpot or vase of irregular form carved in high relief with two cranes standing on some of the rocks at the base, flanked by a gnarled pine tree and a prunus tree growing from the rocks and along with the bamboo on the reverse forming the 'Three Friends', the stone of rich mottled blue-green color; one a white and red chalcedony vase or water-dropper well carved as a dragon/carp leaping from waves, the soft red area of the stone used for the rocks at the base, small chips; the third a well-carved 'seaspray' quartz seal, the square block surmounted by a mythical beast with ribbed chest and curly mane and tail, the underside carved with four characters; some small chips--4¼, 6 and 5 5/8in. (10.8, 15.2 and 14.3cm.) high (3)
