Beschreibung:

Three leaves containing parts of a Litany, from an illuminated Book of Hours, in Latin on parchment [southern Netherlands (probably Ghent), second half of fifteenth century] Three leaves, each ruled in pink for a single column of 12 lines in an excellent lettre bâtarde with ornamental cadels in the lowermost lines, each supplication beginning with a one-line initial in blue or burgundy initial with white feathered penwork, each on gold grounds, line-fillers in same, slight cockling to edge of one leaf, else in outstanding condition with wide and clean margins, 134 by 90mm. These leaves are from a handsome and elegant miniature Book of Hours, most probably produced for a patron from Ghent: the presence of SS. Bavo (d.659), Pharahildis (d.750) and Gudwal (Welsh saint who led a mission in Cornwall, and whose relics were deposited in Blandinburg Abbey in Ghent in 955/6) point to that city, and the general location is confirmed by SS. Armand (patron saint of Belgium, d.675), and Winnoc (Welsh saint who served as head of a monastery in Wormhout and was initially buried there, d.716/17). Gudwal is a rare saint, and the original owner may have lived in or around the monastery of Blandinburg.
