Three: Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant F. J. Merryweather, Rifle Brigade, wounded in action, 1 September 1916 1914-15 Star (S-3017 C.Q.M. Sjt., Rif. Brig.); British War and Victory Medals (S-3017 A.W.O. Cl. 2, Rif. Brig.) Army L.S. & G.C., E.VII.R. (90298 Tptr. E. J. Hill R.H.A.) good very fine and better (4) £100-140 Footnote Frederick John Merryweather was born in Surbiton, Surrey on 8 June 1890. A Hosier by occupation, he attested for the Army at Westminster on 9 September 1914, aged 24 years, 4 months. Posted to the 11th Battalion Rifle Brigade he was promoted to Sergeant in March 1915 and Quartermaster Sergeant in June 1915. With the 11th Battalion he served in the British Expeditionary Force from 21 July 1915 and was promoted to Acting Company Sergeant-Major in June 1916. He was wounded by shrapnel in the right ankle near Guillemont on 1 September 1916 and was invalided home on 6 September. Recovering somewhat, he was then posted to the 5th (Reserve) Battalion Rifle Brigade as Company Quarter Master and later as Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant. Discharged to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 12 February 1919. With copied research. Ernest John Hill was born in Devonport in 1878. He enlisted as a ‘Boy’ in the Royal Artillery at Woolwich on 19 May 1892, aged 14 years. Appointed a Trumpeter in the Royal Horse Artillery in February 1895. Served in India, October 1899-February 1906. Awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. with gratuity by A.O. 254 of 1910. Promoted to Sergeant-Trumpeter in August 1911. Served in the U.K. until discharged on 15 January 1919. With copied research.
