He served with the regiment, as Corporal of Horse, in Egypt from 1st August to 19th October, 1882. He was promoted Troop Corporal Major in 1885 but reverted, at his own request, to the rank of Corporal of Horse in 1888. He transferred to the Royal School of Music at Kneller Hall, as Quarter-Master-Sergeant and Acting Sergeant Major, for a brief period before his final discharge in December, 1891.
