TITFORD'S EARLY WORK ON THE BOTANY OF THE AMERICAS AND THE WEST INDIES. Titford was born in Jamaica, the son of an apothecary and army surgeon in the 60th Royal American regiment, and in 1787 was taken to London, where he was brought up by his uncle William Titford. In 1802 Titford returned to Jamica to take over his father's plantation of coffee and pimento at Mount Moreland, and he collected seeds and plants throughout the island, sending samples to the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (later the Royal Society of Arts) in London, to which he was subsequently elected a corresponding member. In 1807 he travelled to North America, where he collected further botanical specimens which he sent (with accompanying descriptions and drawings) to the Society of Arts. In 1811 Titford returned to England and began preparations for the publication of his Sketches ... , which was issued in 6 parts between October 1811 and December 1812. The publication in parts led to copies being bound up with the pre- and postliminary text in varying sequences; this copy is complete, apart from a blank preceding the title, noted by TL2, which states however that 'in all copies viewed by us, the blank leaf is cancelled'. Arnold Arboteum 692; BM(NH) V, p.2117; Dunthorne 306; Great Flower Books p.144; Nissen BBI 1968; Pritzel 9369; TL2 14606.
