Title: Lyagushka Kvakushka Author: Sholok, Edv[ard] Place: Harbin, Manchuria, China Publisher: “Mirok” Date: ca. 1935 Description: Undated. 7 x10”,16pp. Color pictorial covers and black-and-white illustrations (signed A.Komarov) on each page of Russian text. Rare. Only known copy of the Harbin edition. A bibliographic mystery: Three books by Edvard Sholok appear in WorldCat: a 1929 drama for the Moscow theater, a 1933 Yiddish book about Gypsies, published in Minsk, and a 1949 history of the Moscow theater. No children’s book by him is listed. There are also no listed imprints at all by a “Mirok” publishing house in Harbin, the Chinese Manchurian city which attracted a large Russian émigré population before and during the Japanese occupation of the 1930s and early ‘40s. A “Mirok” (Little World) Russian children’s magazine was issued from 1902 to 1917, but it ended with the Soviet Revolution and, afterwards, old copies were purged from library shelves as politically unsuitable. The illustrator, Komarov, did some childrens’ book work in Moscow in the 1920s, but, like Sholok, his work disappeared in the ‘30s. Perhaps this little book is the sole survival of some obscure group of Russian émigrés who fled to China during the pre-war Stalinist purges. Since our original description, we have learned that a copy of this book appears in the catalogue of the Russian State Library - which is not indexed by WorldCat. A First Edition was apparently published in Moscow in 1923 with different illustrations and the author's name changed to a Yiddish version; a later Moscow edition, with these illustrations, appeared in 1927. There is no mention in the Russian catalogue of this Harbin edition or why the book was reprinted by an emigre press in Manchuria. It's possible, as we first surmised, that Sholok emigrated to China during the tumultuous Stalinist purge years of the 1930s. Lot Amendments The first edition was published in Moscow in 1923 with different illustrations and the author's name changed to a Yiddish version; a later Moscow edition, with these illustrations, appeared in 1927. Condition: Very good. Item number: 276130
