Title: The Sea-Wolf Author: London, Jack Place: New York Publisher: The Macmillan Company Date: 1904 Description: vii, [1], 366 + [3] ad pp. Frontispiece and 5 plates by W. J. Aylward. Blue cloth lettered in white on front cover, in gilt on spine, cover illustrated in dark blue, orange, and white, top edge gilt. First Edition, second issue, first binding. Inscribed and signed on the front free endpaper by Edward G. Robinson and Hobart Bosworth, two actors who played the cruel captain Wolf Larson in movie treatments, as if to Jack London, plus signatures of two other actors. The inscriptions read: "Thank you Jack - for as great an opportunity an actor ever had, Edward G. Robinson, March 1941"; beneath that "-and me too dear Jack for the Sea Wolf and our precious years of friendship. Hobart Bosworth, the first Larson (1913)." Below that inscription is the signature of John Garfield, who played George Leach in the 1941 version. On the front pastedown is the signature of comic actor Charlie Ruggles, perhaps one of ownership, and the inscriptions to Jack were actually for him. Laid in is an 8-page foldout brochure for the 1913 production, illustrated with stills; on the last page is an announcement for early production by Bosworth Inc. of nine other Jack London stories, "and all other stories by Mr. London, past, present and to come." First binding, with spine lettering in gilt, not white; second issue, with title page a cancel with corrected copyright statement - only a few copies, perhaps only two, of the first issue are known to exist. BAL 11882; Sisson & Martens, p. 19. Lot Amendments Condition: Rubbing to covers, spine leaning, shaken, about very good. Item number: 232371
