Title: The Trail of Beauty Author: Allen, Harris Stearns Place: San Francisco Publisher: Lewis & Dorothy Allen at their home letterpress Date: 1940 Description: With an original watercolor by William Gaskin (printers' brother-in-law and director of San Francisco's Federal Art Project), tipped-in, as issued. 9x5¾, golden cloth-backed decorative paper over boards, paper spine label. No. 64 of 100 copies "for private distribution only" on hand-made Maidstone paper. First Edition. Signed at the end of Author's Foreword; additionally, inscribed and signed to Alexander & Mary McAdie from Harris Stearns Allen...Virginia" on the blank preliminary leaf. Also, with a 10-line holograph poem hand-written by Harris Allen in back on leaf with printed caption "For Your Trail of Beauty" after colophon. First three lines in black ink, rest in blue. The first Allen Press book. "It was especially suitable that for our first book we should select a text by my father, the catalyst of our printing ambitions" - Allen Press Biblio. 1. No copies found in ABPC auction records for the past twenty-five years. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine sunned, light shelf wear and soiling, else very good. Item number: 187520
