Whilst the author is unknown, the nature of the text and plates suggest that the book was of primary use to land surveyors and probably for the early surveyors of The Ordnance Survey, with the dedication being to "The Junior Officers of The British Army". With descriptions and instructions of the use of instruments such as a surveying compass, sextant, and spirit level, as well as methods of military sketching.
