Title: Traité de Mécanique Céleste Author: Laplace, Pierre Simon Place: Paris Publisher: J.B.M. Duprat / Courcier Date: 1798-1805 Description: 4 volumes. xxxii, 368; [4], 382; xxiv, 303, [1]; xl, 347, [1] pp. (4to) 25x19 cm (9¾x7½”), period quarter calf & pastepaper boards, spines tooled in gilt, morocco lettering pieces. First Edition. A classic of celestial mechanics, which Richard Bateman considered one of the greatest scientific treatises ever written, as he states in his notes on his collection. This copy without the supplements at the end of volumes 3 and 4. Volume 4 should have a folding engraved plate, apparently issued with the supplement, and not present here. There was a fifth volume, published in 1825, not present here and often absent, "comprising a series of addenda to the first four volumes". Lot Amendments Condition: A little wear to spines, rubbing to joints, front joint on volume 4 with chip; light foxing to contents, occasional stains most evident in volume 3; overall very good. A nice set in original state. Item number: 287956
