Title: Travels to the West of the Alleghany Mountains, in the States of Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessea, and Back to Charleston, by the Upper Carolines... Author: Michaux, F[rancois] A[ndré] Place: London Publisher: B. Crosby & J.F. Hughes Date: 1805 Description: [iii]-xii, 294 pp. 7¾x4¾, later quarter morocco and cloth, top edge gilt. Second English Edition. The son of the noted French botanist André Michaux, Francois Michaux at age fifteen accompanied his father to America in 1785 when the latter was commissioned by the French government to study the forest trees of North America. Returning to France in 1790 for the purpose of education, he came back to the U.S. in 1801 a trained botanist, and embarked upon the travels described in the present work. He was later captured by the British and held on Bermuda (resulting in a scientific study of that island), and went to the States once more upon his release. He is perhaps best known for his three-volume North American Sylva. Howes M579. Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear to spine ends and corners, some late 19th-century ownership markings to endpapers; possibly lacking half-title or other preliminary, title reinserted and coming a little loose again; internally a very clean, fresh copy.
