Très rare cheval en porcelaine blanche, Meissen, circa 1928, E.A A very rare Meissen large white model of a horse, circa 1928Artist's example Modelled by Max Esser on a wavy-edged base with mounted on a rectangular pedestal, 59cm high, 61cm across, crossed swords with dot between the tips to side of pedestal base, incised model number A.1159, impressed 136 (small flat chip to tail and base corner)FootnotesProvenance: Max Esser (1885-1945); Acquired directly from the Estate of the artist Literature: Rafael 2014, ill. 2 Esser modelled this horse in clay in April 1927 and finished the plaster model by the end of the month, which he reworked between August and October, when he delivered the finished model to the Meissen manufactory. The technical difficulties encountered in producing such large models were considerable and Esser advised and assisted the manufactory repairers in the process. This notwithstanding, Esser only received his own porcelain example (the present lot) on 26 March 1929, and only a single example was sold by March 1933, when Max Adolf Pfeiffer left the Meissen manufactory, and seven examples of this model were sold in the following years. This model was exhibited between May and October 1928 at the exhibition "Deutsche Kunst" in Düsseldorf, and in the special exhibition of contemporary and 18th-century Meissen models held by the Meissen manufactory in the 'Weisser Saal' of the Berlin Schlossmuseum from April to June 1931. Only one other example of this model is known in post-War literature, sold from a private collection in Alsace at Nagel Auktionen, Stuttgart, 15 December 2021, lot 2638.
