Fine. “WASHINGTON WAS ABUSED IN THE PRESS OF HIS TIME AND THERE NEVER WAS A MORE THOROUGHLY MISREPRESENTED PRESIDENT THAN THOMAS JEFFERSON” Truman puts on his Presidential historian’s hat and takes a swipe at a muckraking reporter. He thanks Burrus for writing in protest against William Bradford Huie’s piece in the April 1951 issue of Cosmopolitan titled, “The Terrible Tempered Mr. Truman.” “He wrote a worse article than that for last month’s American Mercury,” Truman points out. “In going over the history of various Presidents I find this is nothing,” he continues. “Washington was abused in the press of his time and there never was a more thoroughly misrepresented President than Thomas Jefferson ” Jackson, Lincoln, Cleveland and Wilson were all “thoroughly misrepresented.” Cleveland was “almost hounded...to his grave....So I don’t let these things bother me for the simple reason I know that I am trying to do the right thing and eventually the facts will come out. You and I will probably be holding a conference with St. Peter when that happens.
