TURBERVILLE, George (c.1540-c.1610). The Booke of Faulconrie or Hauking, for the onely Delight and Pleasure of all Noblemen and Gentlemen , London: for Christopher Barker 1575. Large woodcut on title and 44 illustrations in the text (including many repeats), 2 full-page, with A6 blank. (First A2&3, first B1&2 and the final errata leaf expertly repaired at lower margin with no damage to text, headline of K2 skilfully repaired and strengthened, a few very light stains at the beginning). [ Bound with :] [TURBERVILLE, G.]. The Noble Arte of Venerie or Hunting ... translated and collected for the Pleasure of all Noblemen and Gentlemen, out of the Best Approued Authors . London: Henry Bynneman for Christopher Barker [1575]. Large woodcut on title and 51 illustrations in the text (including a few repeats), several full-page, 4 pages of woodcut music 'The measures of blowing'. (Expert repairs in fore-margin of D7, outer and lower margin of N3, N6&7 and the inner margin of T2, none with any damage to text). 2 works in one volume, 4° (191 x 134mm). Tan morocco gilt with black morocco onlays in Elizabethan style by Riviere, gilt edges. Provenance : Contemporary inscription on an endpaper (faded) -- early 17th-century inscription on same leaf 'A present Remedye for the Ringe frounte. fol 469' -- Sir Robert Throckmorton (18th-century inscription on title and armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITIONS OF THE TWO BEST KNOWN HAWKING AND HUNTING WORKS OF THE 16TH CENTURY nominally by George Turberville, an intimate friend of Spenser and the subject of an epitaph by Sir John Harington, who was no less well known for his poetry. His Booke of Faulconrie is essentially an adaptation of the works of Giorgi, Carcano, Tardif and Artelouche, and the anonymous Noble Art of Venerie is to all intents and purposes a translation of Du Fouilloux's La Venerie , the Paris, Galiot du Pré edition of 1573, with the woodcuts almost identical copies. These works are almost always found together. Three of the full-page woodcuts in the second work depict Elizabeth I at a picnic, being presented with fewmets by a hunter and being invited to slit open a stag. In the second edition of 1611 these woodcuts are altered with James I taking Elizabeth's place. Schwerdt II, pp. 270-71; Souhart 469; Harting 15 (1st work); STC 24324 and 24328.
