Die Turner Collection ist, vielmehr war eine herausragende Sammlung von rund 1400 Büchern und Handschriften, die Charles W. Turner (1886-1973), ein Beamter des Scottish Education Department in Edinburgh, zur Geschichte und Entwicklung der Mathematik und verwandter Fächer (zumal Physik, Geodäsie und Astronomie) von der Zeit nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg bis in die sechziger Jahre zusammengetragen hat. 1968 stiftete Turner aus persönlicher Verbundenheit zur Universität Keele und zu David Ingram, dem Leiter der dortigen Physikabteilung, der Universitätsbibliothek Keele diese seine wertvolle Sammlung. Susan Hill hat sie später komplett katalogisiert, der Catalogue of the Turner Collection of the History of Mathematics Held in the Library of the University of Keele ist 1982 gedruckt erschienen (Keele, University Library; 4 Bl., 231 S.) Daß es diesen gedruckten Katalog gibt, ist sowohl bibliotheksgeschichtlich wie wissenschaftshistorisch ein Glücksfall. Die Turner Collection wurde nämlich 1998 an den Antiquar Simon Finch in London für eine Million Pfund Sterling verkauft, weil die Universität liquide Mittel benötigte, um insbesondere ihre neuen Aufgaben im Bereich der elektronischen Information erfüllen zu können. Seitdem tauchen Exemplare aus der Turner Collection offen und völlig legal im Handel auf, Besitzansprüche der Universität Keele bestehen keine. VORHANDEN: ALLMAN, G.
