Account of a Tour in Normandy, undertaken chiefly for the purpose of investigating the Architectural Antiquities of The Duchy.... London: John and Arthur Arch, 1820. 2 volumes. 8vo (250 x 158 mm). vii, [1], [4], 227, [1], [10]; [8], 300, [14] pp. 50 plates on mounted India paper, woodcuts in text (some with facing "hors-texte" impressions). Contemporary red glazed boards, spine gilt, green morocco labels, t.e.g., others uncut. Marginal stain to top edges. A bit of edge chipping, especially to volume two. Provenance: Lord Rosebery (bookplate), William Beckford (notes, sale 1883 lot 2757, and Sothebys 28 October 1975). WILLIAM BECKFORD'S COPY, containing 3 1/2 pp notes in volume one and 1 p in volume two in Beckford's hand. With a characteristic comment by Beckford: "This is not correct– Had our antiquarian Traveller taken the trouble of a scrupulous enquiry upon this subject at the College of Arms, he might have discovered that the Marquis of Buckingham has less to do with Granvilles or Grenvilles than he is aware of– The Ancestors of that pompous & fortunate personage (very plain gentlemen indeed) were contented with the rural appellation of Greenfield but a very few centuries ago exchanged the Country for the Town only when they began to rise into opulence."
