TURNER, Dawson (1775-1858) -- Catalogue of the Principal Part of the Library . London: S. Leigh Sotheby & John Wilkinson, 7 March 1853. 8 o (217 x 130 mm). Added lithographed portrait of Turner, contemporary newspaper cuttings and obituaries on flyleaves. Bound for Robert Hale in quarter vellum, original wrappers bound in (front wrapper cut round and mounted, printed paper spine label partly lacking). Provenance : Robert Hale (bindings). "Many of the books reached extravagant prices and the competition generally was more sprited than usual" (from a contemporary account on flyleaf). [ With: ] LINCOLN, William Simpson Monthly Catalogue, No. 91. English, Foreign, Classical and Miscellaneous Books... from the Sale of Dawson Turner . London, April, 1853. 8 o. 12 pp. Later wrappers. [ With: ] TURNER, Dawson -- Remaining Portion of the Library . London: Puttick & Simpson, 16 May 1859. -- Catalogue of the Manuscript Library of the late Dawson Turner . London: Puttick & Simpson, 6 June 1859. Two volumes bound in one, 8 o. Contemporary calf (rebacked). The ordinary issue of the catalogue of the manuscript library. This copy has the "Add. MSS" numbers of those lots acquired by the British Museum added in contemporary manuscript. [ With: ] TURNER, Dawson -- Catalogue of the Manuscript Library of the late Dawson Turner . London: Puttick & Simpson, 6 June 1859. 8 o. Original blindstamped cloth. Provenance : Robert Fitch (signature on title). PRICED in a contemporary hand, ruled in red, a large and fine paper copy, with the plates (the ordinary issue is unillustrated). This is the most important component of the sale of documents, manuscripts, autographs and printed books collected by Turner, a banker, antiquary and botanist. It realized £6,558.8.0. As Janet Ing Freeman has shown in "The Postmaster of Ipswich," 1997, Turner was almost certainly an accomplice of the historian William Stevenson Fitch (1793-1859) in the theft of manuscripts and papers from the libraries at Ham House and Helmingham Hall. Fitch's preferred method "seems to have been to acquire material and to disguise its origins by disposing it through Dawson Turner" (Woudhuysen, "Fitch's Filchings," TLS, 1997). Many of the lots in the manuscript sale were bought by the British Museum. This copy bears the contemporary ownership inscription Robert Fitch, possibly a relation of William Fitch. See De Ricci, pp.137-8. [ With: ] TURNER, Dawson -- Descriptive Index of the Contents of Five Manuscript Volumes, illustrative of the History of Great Britain, in the Library of Dawson Turner . Great Yarmouth: Privately Printed by Charles Sloman, 1851. 8 o. Original cloth. The second, enlarged edition of Turner's detailed catalogue of his astonishing collection of 277 royal and noble letters from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. (5)
