PRICED in a contemporary hand, ruled in red, a large and fine paper copy, with the plates (the ordinary issue is unillustrated). This is the most important component of the sale of documents, manuscripts, autographs and printed books collected by Turner, a banker, antiquary and botanist. It realized £6,558.8.0. As Janet Ing Freeman has shown in "The Postmaster of Ipswich," 1997, Turner was almost certainly an accomplice of the historian William Stevenson Fitch (1793-1859) in the theft of manuscripts and papers from the libraries at Ham House and Helmingham Hall. Fitch's preferred method "seems to have been to acquire material and to disguise its origins by disposing it through Dawson Turner" (Woudhuysen, "Fitch's Filchings," TLS, 1997). Many of the lots in the manuscript sale were bought by the British Museum. This copy bears the contemporary ownership inscription Robert Fitch, possibly a relation of William Fitch.
