TURNER, Joseph Mallord William (1775-1851). Autograph letter signed, to Henry Bicknell, 15 December 1848, 1 page, 12mo, with envelope bearing wax seal . Written towards the end of his life, Turner is in poor health and so has to decline an invitation to dine with Henry Bicknell at Effra Lodge, Brixton. It seems likely that this was the son of Elhanan Bicknell, the art patron and businessman, who lived at Herne Hill and made his fortune from the whaling industry. Turner painted four whaling pictures in 1845-6. Henry formed his own art collection, and Turner's letter to him makes reference to this involvement with artists, 'this note will open the gallery door'.
