Turner, Joseph Mallord William 1775-1851 British, Tynemouth, Northumberland. 6.5 x 9 ins., (16.5 x 23 cms.), Line Engraving on India paper laid on wove paper; Engraved inscriptions: Drawn by J.M.W.Turner, Engraved by W.R.Smith (William Raymond Smith). 1831. Hand Coloured. Provenance: Illustrated Catalogue of Acquisitions 1986-88, The Tate Gallery, London 1996. The engraving was part of a series commissioned by Charles Heath of Picturesque Views of England and was published 1827 to 1838. William Raymond Smith and John Charles Varrall engraved plates for the History of Richmondshire. The publication of this series was problematical with differing successive owners falling into financial difficulties. Eventually all the images were published. The engravings for England and Wales were still in Turner's house in Queen Anne Street when he died. Picturesque Views of England and Wales was not a commercial success, today the series is regarded as one of the finest and one of the most important made from Turner's work.
