Beschreibung:

Two bifolia from a Missal, with readings for the Feast of St. Swithun and the translation of his relics, in Latin, decorated manuscript on parchment [England (probably Winchester), second half of thirteenth century] Two bifolia, double column, 37 lines in an English early gothic bookhand, rubrics in red, initials in red and turquoise with scrolling penwork in contrasting colours, prickmarks visible at edge of some leaves, slightly scuffed in places and some red ink faded, one bifolium with water damage having created hole in centre of gutter (but without loss to text), each leaf 165 by 110 mm. The text here includes a prayer and a reading for the translation of St. Swithun (d. c. 862), the Anglo-Saxon bishop of Winchester, locating him “tempore regis Edgari” and also noting Bishop “Ethelwold” of Winchester, as well as elsewhere noting Pandulph “apostolice sedis legatus cantuariensis” (presumably the papal legate and bishop of Norwich, d. 1226), and an abbot of Fleury named Nummolus.
