Two binding fragments from decorated manuscripts, in Latin, on vellum 2 fragments, (a) bifolium from a manuscript of St. Augustine's Commentary on Psalm 68 & 69, 255mm. by 380mm., written space 212mm. by 133mm. (trimmed at top with loss of a line or two), 38 lines in black ink in a fine early Gothic hand, 14 small initials in red, incipit on recto and explicit on verso in red decorated capitals, one very large 12-line complex white-vine initial, with its body composed of curving panels decorated with small circles and infilled with areas of red, and the whole terminating in a spray of curling intertwined foliage which fills the central area of the initial, each tendril terminating in fleshy leaf-ends which curl over themselves at right angles and are common to German art of this period, but with distinctive southern German or Austrian features in the body of these shoots in the form of double penstrokes to create a small bind or bridge between the bases of parallel shoots where they split off from each other (see F. Avril & C. Rabel, Manuscrits enluminés d'origine germanique, 1995, item 122, reproduced in pl. cxv; that manuscript catalogued there as third quarter of twelfth century, and perhaps Austrian), small holes and folds, else good condition, southern Germany or Austria, mid-twelfth century; (b) fragment of a manuscript with line-drawn wheel for astrological calculation, in situ on early seventeenth-century binding of printed book with pasteboards (Opusculum D. Dionysii Carthusiani, pars tertia, 1603; from library of the Franciscans of Ingol[stadt]: inscription in seventeenth-century hand on front page, 'Ad Bibl. S. francis Ingol', and most probably reusing manuscripts from their own library), 170mm. by 130mm., calculation diagram with title 'Ciclus Solaris ... ad annos hic in pri[m]a tab[u]la des[cri]pta' in red and brown ink, with Arabic numbers 1-28 and small letters, all surmounted by a tall indicator in blue and red with remains of 13 lines and a blue initial with red penwork on front board, remains of 31 lines on back, with text discussing the subtraction of 1438, 1234, 1211, 1290 and 1491 years through using this diagram, somewhat rubbed, but diagram in good condition
