TWO-FISTED TALES No. 32 Author: Place: Publisher: Entertaining Comics Date: March-April, 1953 Description: VG+ (4.5). Flat, clean, attractive mag with 1/2" split at top spine (split has rough edges, suggesting insect wear). If not for 1/2" split, book would grade at least 7.0. Cream pages, edges tanning. Wally Wood cover. Art by Davis, Craig, Wood, Kubert. Kurtzman's research assistant, Jerry De Fuccio, wrote the Jack Davis illustrated submarine story, "Silent Service," for this ish. Before permitting De Fuccio to script the story, Kurtzman needed assurance that his insistence on verisimilitude would be honored: De Fuccio: "Harvey asked me, 'What do you know about submarines?' So I said, 'I only have a six-foot shelf on submarines at home.' And Harvey said, 'That isn't enough. You're going to New London, Connecticut. You're going to the sub base, and you're going to get a lot of information. I want you to come home with sound effects: the sound of the claxon, the diving bell and the supper chimes.'" -The Complete Two-Fisted Tales, vol. 3 [Russ Cochran: 1980]. As Frank Jacobs wrote in The Mad World of William M. Gaines [Lyle Stuart: 1972], "De Fuccio not only visted the base, he went down in the submarine, after which he wired Kurtzman, 'MANY BRAVE HEARTS ARE BURIED IN THE DEEP. GLUB GLUB.'"
