Each captioned and titled and signed in graphite by the artist. One reads at bottom margin: "Sketch for Left Panel of Cocktail Room of Hotel Sainte Claire 'Early California Gold Rush "Period' Size of panel 13'x13'." The other reads at bottom margin: "Sketch for Right Panel in Cocktail Room of Hotel Sainte Claire - San Jose - 'Early Spanish Entry in California' - Size of panel 13'x13'." Each watercolor image size is 33x33.5 cm (13x13¼") on larger board. Two original watercolors of California and the West, by American artist Jon S. Oshanna (1899-1980). He settled in San Francisco later in life, and is best known for his murals and hotel work, such as these two pieces produced for the Hotel Sainte Claire in San Jose, California. The beautiful painting of titled "Early California Gold Rush" depicts Wells Fargo & Co. in the background, in the foreground are well dress folk and a stagecoach. Both paintings signed in pencil by the artist. Lot Amendments Condition: Margins are foxed, browned and soiled, some bumping to corners, a bit of foxing affecting top edges of watercolor (in the blue sky for example); else watercolor images are near fine, board and margins are only very good.
