ϒ A fine and large turned ivory St George pattern chess set, mid-19th century, possibly by William Lund, one side stained red, the opposing natural, of stepped disc design, the Kings with Maltese cross and crown finials and the Queens with large ball and crown tops, one rook and one knight on each side marked with a coronet, the Kings 9.3cm high The present lot bears strong similarities to sets from the Fleet Street workshop of William Lund. See for example the set sold at Christie's South Kensington, the Kasper Stock Collection of Chess Sets, 27 May 2004, lot 91. Another marked Lund set with very similar Kings' finials, and nearly identical knights and pawns was shown at the World Chess Hall of Fame, during the exhibition 'Prized and Played: Highlights from the Jon Crumiller Collection', 2013.
