U.S. Model 1850 Staff & Field Officer's Sword Identified to 2nd Lieutenant Thomas Francis Quinn, 4th US Infantry, c. 1864, pierced brass hilt with foliate designs and "US," wire-wrapped shagreen grip, steel blade, steel scabbard with brass fittings, throat engraved "T. Quinn," back of the throat marked "MASS/CHICOPEE/AMES MFG. CO.," with a note on the scabbard "Thomas Francis Quinn's/Officers sword 4th U.S./Civil War sword of Capt Thomas Francis Quinn/4th US Infantry For/gallantry in front of Petersburg/VA bvt. Capt," blade lg. 31 1/2, overall lg. 37 in. Provenance: The collection of Ron Tunison. Note: Thomas Quinn was born in Ireland and emigrated to the United States. He enlisted in the regular army in 1853 and worked his way through the ranks. According to Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America , Volume 14, Part 2, p. 1096, he was actually given a brevet to 1st Lieutenant, not Captain.
