Douglas (1898-1980), who was appointed by Franklin D. Roosevelt. He is one of the youngest justices ever appointed and holds the record for the longest term in the history of the Supreme court. Continuing the collection, a signature from Stanley Forman Reed (1884-1980), who presided over the Brown v. Board of education case; Justice Wiley Rutledge (1894-1949); Justice Hugo L. Black (1886-1971), who did little to further the cause of civil rights within the courts; Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, U.S. Secretary of State, and 11th Chief Justice of the U.S., Charles E. Hughes (1862-1848); andCharles Elmore Cropley (1894-1952). Starting at the age of 33, the youngest page in Supreme Court history, he later became a Clerk to the Supreme Court Justices. He swore in President Franklin Roosevelt and, with the exception of two years, served the courts for almost his entire life. To complete the collection, an official seal of the U.S. Supreme court is included in the lot. Condition: The official seal is clipped and is faded. All signatures are clear, but there is toning on the cards.
