UNION CASES] Collection of 43 Union cases, many with daguerreotypes or tintypes still present. The cases exhibit a wide variety of styles and materials. Not all the cases have their original contents (and a few appear never to have been used), but there are a total of 38 images in all in the collection (including a few housed in double cases). These range from full-plate to sixteenth-plate. Materials used include card, velvet, leather, papier-mache, plastic, mother-of-pearl, etc. The condition ranges from poor (a few cases have tape repairs on the spine) to very good indeed. The collection is broadly representative of the history and development of the Union case, and includes a number of designs that are either identical to, or derived from, those in Floyd and Marion Rinhart's standard work on the subject, American Miniature Case Art, a copy of which is included in the lot.
