Morris (1827-1900) patented a repeating carbine in 1859 and actively promoted its use in the military. In September, he was made colonel of the 135th New York Infantry, which was converted to a heavy artillery company and assigned to the defense of Washington. Promoted to brigadier general in March 1863, he served in the Gettysburg campaign, the Wilderness, and was wounded at Spotsylvania. After the war, Morris lived in Putnam County, NY, and was active in the National Guard and local politics. Condition: Light, even toning to carte. Signature remains bright and legible.
