Beschreibung:

United States of Europe.- Daumier (Honore) Souvenirs du Congres de la Paix, set of 6 lithographed plates, signed in the stones, sheets 25.5 x 36 cm. (10 x 14 in.), letterpress text on versos occasionally showing through, light browning & marginal repair to plate 6, Paris, Le Charivari, 7-12 September 1849. ⁂ International delegates attending the two-day Paris peace congress convened by president-elect Victor Hugo and vice-president Richard Cobden included 300 from Great Britain, 230 from France, and 23 from the United States. Hugo's opening address calling for a United States of Europe to put an end to national belligerence through free trade was both prescient and premature but inspired widespread ridicule, as here, for its perceived utopianism.
