VALCIECO, Raffaello. La conceptione della Madon[n]a seco[n]do la scottista opinione . s.n., [ca. 1525]. 8° (147 x 98mm). 12 leaves. Large woodcut on title-page of Saint Elizabeth holding the Virgin Mary with another child and two angels and full-page woodcut on the verso of a unicorn shot with an arrow, title and dedication printed in gothic, the text in roman. (Lightly browned throughout, small hole in title-page.) 19th-century Italian quarter calf. Probably the only edition of this very rare little poem in ottava rima on the conception of the Virgin Mary which we have tentatively dated ca.1525 on the basis of the death of the dedicatee, Elisabetta Montefeltro, Duchess of Urbino, in 1526. Very little seems to be known of the author, but he claims, in the 1518 Milan edition of Boiardo's Orlando innamorato , to have written the fifth book. Brunet I, 1047; not in Sander/Rava, BLSTC, etc. ARETINO, Pietro. Il Genesi...con la visione di Noe ne la quale vede i misterii del testamento vecchio e del nuovo. Venice: [no printer], 1545. 8° (157 x 96mm). Large woodcut portrait of Aretino on title-page. (Same leaf cut down at outer margin, a few leaves stained.) Contemporary limp vellum (lacks ties). Probably the fifth or sixth edition - the first appeared in 1538 - of one of a series of religious works written by Aretino at the time when he was attempting to obtain a cardinalcy from Julius III. Not surprisingly, he did not meet with success. Sander 510 (note); Casali 35 (note). (2)
