Vallabhbhai Patel (1875-1950) – Letter - a handwritten letter in Gujerati, written by Patel likely whilst imprisoned. It reads: Parwada Date: 10.10.33 Dear Jitu, Hope you have not become sad as you have failed? According to the proverb, “defeated means half won”, so now you have won half the battle. So if you get failed next time, then it means you are passed. “If failure is half success, two failures mean full success”. So now what to worry, you are having the exam again after just three months. Still if you are thinking on that matter that you were saying, then let us start that factory of patent tablets, and get the [illegible] printed so all the troubles gets solved. But if you really don’t want to study then do not worry about passing or failing and take care of your health. Why didn’t you get to know after seating for exam? What can be done knowing after the results came. Tell your mother now to do the Satyanarayan Katha next time. Dahyabhai is well now. When you will return to Mumbai, he will become fully well at that time. Keep writing letters from Mumbai at some intervals. Now you might have become to shaving your beard, so can we tell you barber or not. Yours, Blessings from Vallabhbhai. Written in black ink to a both sides. Folded, some tears, generally a little fragile. Measures 16.5cm x 10cm. Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel (31 October 1875 – 15 December 1950), endeared as Sardar, was an Indian statesman. He served as the first Deputy Prime Minister of India from 1947 to 1950. He was a barrister and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress, who played a leading role in the country's struggle for independence, guiding its integration into a united, independent nation. He was one of the conservative members of the Indian National Congress. In India and elsewhere, he was often called Sardar, meaning "chief" in Hindi, Urdu, and Persian. He acted as the Home Minister during the political integration of India and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947. One of Mahatma Gandhi's earliest political lieutenants, he organised peasants from Kheda, Borsad, and Bardoli in Gujarat in non-violent civil disobedience against the British Raj, becoming one of the most influential leaders in Gujarat. He was appointed as the 49th President of Indian National Congress, organising the party for elections in 1934 and 1937 while promoting the Quit India Movement.
