Collation: s6 a 1 0 b-z 8 & 9 1 0 A-D 8 E 1 0 ( blank, r table of contents, v editor's dedicatory letter to Pandolfo Malatesta of Rimini, dated 15 October 1482, v elegiac verses by Ramusio, a1r editor's preface, a4v text, E9r concluding verses and colophon, E9v register, E10 blank). 253 leaves (of 254, without final blank). 37 lines and headlines. Types: 2:114R; 1:90G (inscription on woodcut diagram on &7r). 96 woodcuts in the text, several nearly full-page. 9- and 3-line initial spaces, some with guide letters. (Fols. p7-8 supplied from another copy, washed and resized, and with lower margins renewed, occasional minor marginal tears or repairs, traces of faint marginal dampstaining.) Early 19th-century brown morocco over pasteboard, sides tooled in blind with Greek key rolls, central triple gilt fillet panel, red and black morocco lettering-pieces on spine (rubbed, a few small repairs). Provenance : scattered 16th-century and later marginalia (washed); unidentified 19th-century inkstamp at end, Second edition of the earliest book to contain illustrations of a technical nature. All but one of the woodcuts are slightly reduced copies of the cuts used in the 1472 edition; the exception is the woodcut of soldiers in a tent on folio r1.
