Second edition of the earliest book to contain illustrations of a technical nature. All but one of the woodcuts are slightly reduced copies of the cuts used in the 1472 edition (see previous lot); the exception is the woodcut of soldiers in a tent on folio r1. Both are illustrated with copies of the woodcuts used in the first edition, the order differing slightly in the Italian edition. The subjects cover a wide range of war machines: battering-rams, cross-bows, catapults, storming wagons, chariots, pontoons, catapults, and even an early type of grenade and a paddle-wheeled submarine. Goff V-89; BMC VII, 952 (IB. 30748); CIBN V-59; HC 15848*; Klebs 1014.1; Norman 2127; Sander 7482.
