Varchi, Benedetto. Florence: Lorenzo Torrentino 1549
This printing of two lectures on artistic theory given by Benedetto Varchi in front of the Accademia Fiorentina in March 1547 contain the first printing of verses by Michelangelo. before they were "amended" by his nephew for the 1623 edition. The publication of the lectures is accompanied by letters to Varchi by Vasari, Bronzino, Pontormo, Battista del Tasso, Francesco da Sangallo Niccolò Tribolo Benvenuto Cellini and Michelangelo himself (who concludes his letter with a snide comment about an unnamed artist, who is Leonardo da Vinci . This formed part of the design of Grand Duke Cosimo to reclaim Michelangelo for Florence, while Michelangelo was working on the new Basilica of St Peter in Rome; Michelangelo had left Florence in the time of Duke Alessandro de' Medici, as indeed had the anti-Medicean Varchi, though Varchi returned seven years later when pardoned by Cosimo.
